The Educational Choice Anomaly for Principles Students: Using Ordinary Supply and Demand Rather than Indifference Curves

The surprise value of many economic observations makes the economics discipline quite interesting for many students. One such anomaly is that providing “free” education in an effort to reduce the number of dropouts can often result in a lower level of educational quality purchased. This result is easy to show with indifference curves, but many instructors of introductory courses do not introduce this analytical technique. As a consequence, a result that many students find quite interesting is seldom presented. The authors show that it is easy to clarify the educational choice anomaly with ordinary supply and demand curves. Moreover, the exercise of doing so provides students with a greater understanding of benefit/cost analysis as well as consumer and producer surplus.

基于固定资产和教育程度的农户家庭健康分析

当前,农村家庭健康与医疗问题成为困扰中国经济社会进一步发展的重要考验,普遍的认识是提高农村健康水平依赖于发展经济和加大医疗卫生投资两个方面。根据理论和经验,家庭固定资产和家庭教育程度是影响家庭健康状况的两个重要因素。通过使用方差分析方法,发现家庭固定资产和教育对家庭健康均产生影响,同时,二者不联合影响家庭健康状况。应通过改进经济增长模式、增加教育投资等方式促进农村家庭健康水平。     

‘Home comes first’: housing and homemaking in Finnish civic educational films during 1945–1969

This article focuses on how the ideals of housing and homemaking were presented in post‐war civic educational films in Finland. The films chosen for the article pertain to housing on a wide scope. The analysis shows that the ideals of good homes appeared to be remarkably consistent in the Finnish educational short films. The most important objective was to guide citizens towards careful household management and saving. Through rationalizing home economics, consumers were able to buy their own home. The ideal housewife had a positive attitude towards technology and rational household management. While the short films instructed people towards temperate and sensible consumption, they also created space for ordinary people to envision new opportunities for consumption.     

基于税收政策视角的高校融资模式研究

随着高等教育体制改革深入和高校扩招，资金短缺成为制约高校和谐健康发展的重要因素，如何解决高校发展过程中的资金瓶颈显得重要而且迫切。本文在分析高校经费来源现状的基础上，基于现行高校税收政策理论，正确分析当前高校资金来源和税收制度缺陷，认为改革现行税收政策，将有助于扩展高校融资渠道，缓解高校融资困境。

Gender preference and transfers from parents to children: an inter-regional comparison

This paper examines whether parents exhibit gender preference in the allocation of family resources to their adult children. Gender preference is defined in the context of an altruistic model for inter-vivos transfer from parents to children extended to include educational investment. Data from the Health and Retirement Study (United States) and the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing are used to show that the degree of gender preference differs across these culturally distinct regions. Among Korean families, empirical results point to male preference as sons receive larger inter-vivos transfers and attain higher levels of education compared with daughters. In contrast, the evidence pertaining to gender preference among American families points to daughter preference as inter-vivos transfers and educational investment is generally higher among female adult children.
